The art of Chotashi has long been widespread in the northern regions of the country and holds a very ancient heritage. In the Talysh language, the word ‘Chotash’ is formed from two words: ‘Cho,’ meaning wood, and ‘Tash,’ meaning carving. When these two words are pronounced together, the term ‘Chotash,’ meaning wood carving, emerges. In fact, in the Talysh language, ‘Chotash’ refers to a person engaged in the activity of carving wood.

In the past, Chotash individuals, using very simple tools available in their surroundings and drawing on their creativity, created essential items for daily life, such as various types of spoons, ladles (Ketra), bowls, and more. The tools used by Chotash individuals included items such as sickles, axes, and ‘Dokun’ (a tool for hollowing spoons), among others.

The term ‘Chotashi’ in the Talysh language also means wood carving. Since this art has been traditionally passed down through generations in the Sakhai family and the late Aynollah Sakhai Qaleh Rudkhani (Babagol) left behind remarkable works in this field, this authentic term was chosen as the brand name for the products of the Babagol Sazabazar Company.”
